2016 Kindergarten Registration
Each winter the Big Spring School District begins the process of preliminary registration for children in the District who are eligible to attend kindergarten in the upcoming school year. The District has designated the following dates to have the preliminary kindergarten process complete: January 18, January 19, January 20, January 21, January 22, February 12, February 26, and March 11 from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.
Kindergarten Registration is being held May 3, 2016 at Mt. Rock, April 28, 2016 at Newville, and May 6, 2016 at Oak Flat. Please contact Carol Frace at 776-2413 to schedule an appointment.

Big Spring Counseling Launches New Website
The Big Spring Counseling Department, which operates collaboratively within a K-12 curriculum framework, recently launched a new website. The website serves as a tool to further the department's mission of providing a support system that enables all students to develop the character and skills to achieve their personal, academic, and career goals.

2016 BIG SPRING CLUB CARE DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT
Beyond the dress down day and the Go Fund Me page for Perry
Jenkins, Big Spring Club CARE will be donating the proceeds of this year’s
dodgeball tournament to the Jenkins family.
The tournament will be held at the high school on March
5th starting at 2 PM (this is a change from the district
calendar). We are looking for teams of 6 ($5 a person/$30 a team) to
participate (and wear team uniforms) that day, and we are also looking for
spectators. The cost to watch is $2 for students and $4 for adults.
This year participants and fans can also order a t-shirt, but that must be done
by February 11th.
We will also have a concession stand available for lunch,
as well as a charity raffle. If you (or anyone you know) is willing to
donate to our raffle, you can reply to this email. We are looking for
gift certificates and merchandise from local businesses, vendors, independent

to play, we are in need of referees for the day! Just contact us to let us know

This past weekend, 7
students participated in the PMEA District 7 Upper Band Festival
at Lebanon High School. As part of this festival, students reaudition
for their seats and the hopes of moving on to the Region V Band Festival in
March. Gina Baldoni was selected, through the reaudition
process, to be a part of the PMEA Region V Band Festival,
where 130 students from 15 counties will be represented. This festival
will take place from March 10-12 at Central York High
School. This is Gina’s 3rd year in a row earning a spot in the
Region festival. While at the Region Festival, Gina will have the
opportunity to audition again for the All-State Festival which takes place in
Hershey this year.

Journey Through Special Education Conference
CPARC is holding its annual special education conference on March 19th at the Park Inn in Mechanicsburg. This conference is one of the few in the area that is designed for both parents and staff and is a great opportunity to gain insight into various topics related to special education. Susan Cappelli Receives Gatorade Secondary School Athletic Trainer Award during the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association Symposium
Boston, MA, January 2016 - Susan Cappelli was presented with the Gatorade Secondary School Athletic Trainer Award during the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association (EATA) Annual Convention. This award recognizes a certified athletic trainer from each of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) ten districts who has made outstanding contributions in furthering his or her high school’s athletic care program or the overall profession of secondary school athletic training.
Cappelli is the Cumberland County representative for the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society (PATS) as well as the President of the Central Pennsylvania Athletic Trainer’s Association. She has tirelessly and excellently served Big Spring High School as their athletic trainer (AT) for the past 18 years.

15 - 16 Chromebook Updates
The school year is quickly approaching and BSSD is excited to continue our secondary Chromebook initiative this year.
6th Grade Families will be able to learn about the program and complete related paperwork at 6th Grade Orientation on August 20th. Chromebooks will be distributed on the first day of School.
9th Grade students will receive their Chromebooks during Dawg Day Freshman Orientation.
All other secondary students will keep their current Chromebook. Please remember to bring them with you on the first day of school!
Protection plans that were purchased during the 14-15 school year will continue to be in effect for the 15-16 school year.

Security Camera Installation on District Buses
In the Big Spring School District, we continually strive to ensure the safety and security of our students. For that reason, the District installed security cameras on all district buses over the summer. If your child rides a district bus (to/from school, activity buses, field trips, etc.), he/she may be subject to video recording. For more information, please contact the District Transportation Coordinator at 717-776-2408.
