BSSD Transportation Updates


The new school year begins on Monday August 25.  The transportation department is working overtime to make sure transportation for your student is provided in a timely manner.  Every effort is being made to assign all students to a safe and efficient stop in a timely manner.

If you are contacting the transportation office by phone we ask for your cooperation as we have a tremendous amount of new registrations this year.  All calls will be returned as soon as possible and sometimes that will be in the evening.  Before returning your call we may need to gather the necessary information to provide you with the answers you deserve.  We ask that you be patient.  We will return you call as soon as we have the necessary information to address your concerns.

If you have registered you child on or after August 21, submitted an address change form, a babysitter form, or a custody calendar you will need to provide transportation for your student until we are able to assign a bus stop.  This will be done as quickly and efficiently as possible; but, it will be done in a way that we have 100% accountability for your child and that takes a day or two to notify everyone involved with your child’s safety. 14-15 Secondary Chromebook Initiative

The Big Spring School District is launching an exciting new learning opportunity for its secondary students this year.  Every student in grades 6 -12 will be issued a Chromebook for his/her exclusive use throughout high school.  The purpose of this initiative is to fully engage students and create a learning environment that fosters critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity.

Information about the Chromebook initiative will be available on the following nights:

August 14 - Dawg Day Parent Presentation @ 6:30  for 9th grade families
August 20 - HS Open House @ 6:30PM  for 11th & 12th grade families
August 21 - 6th Grade Orientation @ 6:00 for 6th grade families
September 3 - 7th & 8th Grade Open House @ 7:00 PM for 7th and 8th grade families

Due to the incredible popularity of Chromebooks in the education market and a rush in sales, Chromebooks may not be available for distribution on these nights.  However, parents will still have the opportunity to learn about the program and complete any necessary paperwork.  Communications regarding the Chromebook program will be sent prior to each information night.

Big Spring High School is looking for a crown bearer and flower girl for the 2014 Homecoming game & dance!

The homecoming football game is on Friday, September 26, with rain date possibilities of Saturday, September 27 or Monday, September 28.

Interested candidates should send a photo with their age and name on the back, as well as the names of the child’s parents and contact information; these photos must be received by Thursday, September 4. Children must be between ages three and five and be residents of the Big Spring School District. Please mail photos to 100 Mount Rock Road, Newville PA 17241, drop them off in the Big Spring High School Office, or email the pictures to mfarrands@bigspringsd.org. Photos will NOT be returned.  All photos will be displayed in the community for voting purposes at the following events/ community locations: Friday, September 5- High School Football at Stadium (6:30-9:30pm)

Sunday September 7- Saylor’s Market (12:00-3:00pm)
Friday September 12- Saylor’s Market (6:00-8:00pm)

Proceeds from voting will benefit the 2015 Big Spring Four Diamonds MiniTHON.  Winners will be notified by Sunday, September 14. Please note that previous winners may not participate again.

Big Spring School District Makes Switch to Follett's Aspen Student Information System

Officials view new web-based solution as important communication tool in community

Big Spring School District has a reputation for making bold decisions in support of teachers, students and community.  Further proof of that is Big Spring's announcement this week it is one of the first districts in the state to switch its student information system (SIS) from its existing SIS to Follett's Aspen, a robust web-based solution designed to maximize the collection, reporting and management of student data and information.

"We're pretty active nationally even though we're a district of 2,800 students," said Richard Fry, superintendent, Big Spring School District.  "We defined our needs, and where we want to go as a district."

Throughout the lengthy search for a new SIS, Fry said, "Aspen rose to the top because it not only met our current needs, but will take us where we want to go with the capability to grow."

Security Camera Installation on District Buses

In the Big Spring School District, we continually strive to ensure the safety and security of our students.  For that reason, the District is in the process of installing security cameras on all district buses.  If your child rides a district bus (to/from school, activity buses, field trips, etc.), he/she may be subject to video recording.  For more information, please contact the District Transportation Coordinator at 717-776-2408.
