Shippensburg University School Study Council Recognizes Outstanding Teachers from BSHS

Shippensburg University and the Shippensburg University School Study Council celebrated American Education Week Thursday, November 12, 2015 by recognizing forty-three outstanding teachers from school districts in eleven counties in South Central Pennsylvania.  The honorees were selected for their outstanding service to their school communities based on their utilization of effective and innovative teaching methods, their dedication to their students, their commitment to ongoing professional development, and for serving in leadership roles in their schools.

Among those recognized were Lauren Hetrick, from the Social Studies Department, and Mallory Farrands, from the English Department, at Big Spring High School. “Through her joy in working with teenagers and passion for teaching, the impact and influence Lauren has had a Big Spring High School and in the Newville community in just seven years is remarkable and awe-inspiring.” said Steve Smith, former principal of BSHS.  “Clearly, students and colleagues marvel at and appreciate her work on so many fronts.”  Additionally, he noted, “In my 21 years as a principal, I have not worked with a teacher who serves and supports her students and school more profoundly than Mrs. Farrands.  Her instructional effectiveness is linked to her high expectations for student effort, participation, and collaboration.”

BSSD Wellness Committee

The BSSD believes that for students to have the opportunity to achieve personal, academic, developmental, and social success, we need to create positive, safe, and health-promoting learning environments at every level, in every setting, throughout the school year.

Research shows that two components, good nutrition and physical activity before, during, and after the school day, are strongly correlated with positive student outcomes.  For example, student participation in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) School Breakfast Program is associated with higher grades and standardized test scores, lower absenteeism, and better performance on cognitive tasks. Conversely, less-than-adequate consumption of specific foods including fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, is associated with lower grades among students. In addition, students who are physically active through recess, physical activity breaks, high-quality physical education, and extracurricular activities – do better academically.

Members of the community, students, and parents are encouraged to be a part of our Student Wellness Committee and help us with creating a school environment that promotes a healthy environment through good nutrition and physical activity.  If you are interested please contact Crystal Header at cheader@bigspring.k12.pa.us

Security Camera Installation on District Buses

In the Big Spring School District, we continually strive to ensure the safety and security of our students.  For that reason, the District installed security cameras on all district buses over the summer.  If your child rides a district bus (to/from school, activity buses, field trips, etc.), he/she may be subject to video recording.  For more information, please contact the District Transportation Coordinator at 717-776-2408.
