The Bulldog Foundation scholarship winners for the 2090 – 2010 school year are Austen Dennison, Felicia Dupert, and Megan Mellot. Each student was awarded $500.00 thanks to your support of the foundation and its outreach to Big Spring students.

Austen Dennison is continuing his education at Harrisburg Area Community College studying Art and Design. Upon graduation he hopes to find employment as a graphic designer or a teacher of graphic design.  According to Austen what helped him be successful as a student in the Big Spring School District is that throughout his middle and high school years, he had teachers who treated him with respect and that respect encouraged him to respect others and influenced him to consider teaching as a career. Crediting middle school Art teacher Mrs. Sue Piper for encouraging his artistic talent, Mrs. Barb Dellinger, advisor of the middle school newspaper club for helping him hone his writing skills, and Mr. Atticks at Vo-tech for assisting him in the field of graphic design, Austen reflects that post-high school education is more business-like and lacks the warmth that the Big Spring School District provides its students. Expressing his gratitude to the Bulldog Foundation and its supporters, Austen notes, “I am so grateful for the scholarship as it has helped me financially and given me encouragement to pursue my career”.

Felicia Dupert is continuing her education at Empire Beauty School in the field of Cosmetology. She has plans to work in a salon to gain experience in the field and then open her own salon. Giving credit to Biology, Health, and Sociology as courses that gave her a solid foundation in her learning, Felicia also notes that having an idea of what students want to pursue as a career post-high school upon entering senior year will provide direction and help in the long run. The scholarship has helped Felicia lower her payments for her continued education, as she gets acclimated to a new environment and school setting.

Megan Mellot who is studying Child Care and Education at HACC. While attending Big Spring, Megan notes that she learned to go after what she wanted and not wait around for things to be handed to her. She credits Mr. Micah Artz for helping her a great deal and finds that the most difficult part of her transition to post-high school education is being in a new environment and having to get used to it. Compared to her time at Big Spring, Megan states that this new phase in her education is helping her get ready for the real world after high school. The Bulldog Foundation scholarship is allowing Megan to pay for college and continue on the path towards giving back to children.
